AKRON, Ohio - Despite recording several top individual finishes, the Marshall University swimming and diving team fell to the Akron Zips late Friday night, 131-104.
The Herd moves to 2-4 on the season with Friday's loss. Highlighting the Thundering Herd's performances were first-place finishes by Lauren Rone, Sarah Kay and Heather Moore.
"Of course we would have liked to come out of here with a win," said head coach Russell Hunt. "But in defeat, the team took this opportunity to start finding their racing legs after a long break from competition."
Rone took top honors in the 1-meter dive with a tally of 238.05. Herd divers followed in sync with second and third place finishes as Haley Holmquist notched a score of 198.67 and Kayla Edwards registered a mark of 183.08.
In the 200 Butterfly, Marshall saw Kay take first place with a time of 2:06.13. Moore nabbed two top finishes in the 500 Freestyle (5:04.52) and 200 Breaststroke (2:31.73).
"With a long stretch of high intensity training behind us, I'm glad to see us racing again," said Hunt. "Tonight I saw players working through that training and our plan is to spend the next month parlaying that training into a positive stretch to the finish."
Contributing to Marshall's team effort was the crew of Lauren Tarka, Lauren Fairbanks, Arlie Rykosky and Tiffany Aeling, who were tops in the 200 Freestyle Relay with a time of 1:41.17.
The Herd returns home to host Ohio on the 18th at 5 p.m.
