NASHVILLE - Lipscomb starter Connor Sinclair (1-0) pitched seven-shutout innings and tallied 11 strikeouts to guide the Bison past the Marshall University baseball team, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon at Dugan Field.
Marshall will look to take the series after splitting the first two games, on Sunday at 2 p.m. EST.
The Herd offense managed just five hits against five different Bison pitchers, with Sinclair holding Marshall to two singles over the first seven frames as he earned the victory and upped Lipsomb's record to 4-3 on the year. Gil Rehwinkel picked up the save, getting the last four outs of the game.
At the plate, Victor Gomez went 2-for-4 and knocked in the Herd's only run as the MU bats were quiet for a majority of the afternoon.
Mike Mason (0-1) suffered the loss on the hill. He logged the first four innings, surrendering three runs (all earned), on four hits with two strikeouts.
In the bottom of the second, the Bison plated two runs thanks to RBI doubles from Ricky Coleman and Kyle Henry. That was all the offense that Lipscomb would need as they added an insurance run in the fourth on a sac fly from Brett Teschner.
MU (3-2) finally mustered up some offense in the top of the eighth when Sinclair was lifted for lefty Blake Fonfara. Leadoff hitter Isaac Ballou greeted the new pitcher by lacing a single back through the box to start a ring of three-straight hits as Kenny Socorro and V.Gomez each collected singles. Ballou came around to score on V.Gomez's base hit to left.
Lipscomb used four pitchers in the eighth to escape without any further damage taking place, thanks to an infield double play and strikeout to end the inning.
The MU bullpen combo of Greg Williams, Josh King and Ryan Butler worked three scoreless innings to keep the Herd in striking distance.
NOTES: Mike Mason registered his 100th career strikeout in the first inning...V.Gomez has five of Marshall's 10 hits in the series...he recorded his 76th career multi-hit game...Ryan Butler made his collegiate debut on the mound...Steven Ross was HBP twice in his MU debut...all five of Marshall's games this season have been decided by two runs or fewer...Socorro started his 106th straight game.
