HOUSTON - Elaine Derricott of the Marshall University track and field team was crowned the individual Heptathlon Champion on Friday at the Conference USA Championship Meet hosted by Rice University.
The Sophomore, Richmond, Va., native used an overall performance to take first place as she took first in the long jump and was in the top three for three events overall (100MH, Shot Put, Long Jump). Derricott is the first-ever Marshall track and field athlete to be crowned a C-USA outdoor individual champion.
Her point total of 5139 was 600 points clear of the school record. She still has the opportunity to become another individual champion this weekend in the long jump.
Teammate Lauren DeHays finished eighth overall in the same competition. Events at the C-USA Championship continue tomorrow at 6 p.m., hosted by the Rice Owls.
