HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall men's soccer team (5-8-3, 3-4-1) took a crucial step towards qualification for the Conference USA Tournament by defeating the No. 15 New Mexico Lobos (10-5-1, 3-4-0) by a score of 2-1 on the road in Albuquerque, N.M. Saturday. Marshall now has 10 points in Conference USA after playing its final conference match Saturday. The Herd is in now in fifth place out of the seven teams that can advance to the Conference USA tournament. Standings can be found here.
AGAINST THE LOBOS
New Mexico started the scoring with a goal from Niko Hansen in the 62nd minute. Hansen received a pass from Chris Gurule and James Rogers and beat Marshall Goalkeeper Bijan Gloston (Clarksville, Tenn.) with a hard shot to the far-post.
Just four minutes later, Marshall worked its way down the opposite end for a goal. Combination play between senior Danny Sellitti (Las Vegas, Nev.), sophomore Ryan Forde (London, England) and RS sophomore Ian Lovern (Bluefield, W.Va.) found sophomore Daniel Jodah (Mississauga, Ontario) who buried the shot for his team-high fifth goal of the season.
The game continued locked at one until the 84th minute, when freshman Christian Kershaw (Severna Park, M.D.) sent a hopeful ball forward. The ball got caught in the wind and took a Marshall bounce, which sophomore Trevor Starcher (Huntington, W.Va.) was able to head past Patrick Poblete for the winner.
In the net, Gloston continued to show the form that had him ranked ninth in the nation and first in Conference USA in saves per game coming into the New Mexico match. Gloston produced seven key saves in the Herd victory.
THE GRAY AREA
Marshall head coach Bob Gray on the New Mexico Win:
"We came out and played really well against a very good team that was in the Final Four last season. We just were able to hang in there and play defensively and then get out and score goals."
"We went into halftime scoreless with New Mexico having most of the possession and they scored a good goal early in the second. Credit to our guys though, because they kept battling and found a winner with a good hustle play by Trevor Starcher."
"This moves us closer now to the Conference USA tournament and I'm hoping we've done enough to get in there now."
