SAN ANTONIO, Texas-Marshall baseball opened its inaugural series with UTSA Friday night, falling 6-2 to the Roadrunners.
Junior Sergio Leon (Miami) turned in a 2-3 performance, freshman Corey Bird (Elkview, W.Va.) went 3-5 with a run and RBI, and sophomore Matt Reed (Purcellville, Va.) turned in a 2-4 day with a run scored.
The Herd outhit the Roadrunners 13 to 12.
Marshall scored its lone run in the top of the sixth after the Herd started off with three consecutive hits from leadoff man Bird (who advanced to second on a fielding error), shortstop Leon, and second baseman Andrew Dundon (Lincoln Park, N.J.) brought Bird home.
UTSA took an early lead, plating a run in the bottom of the first after right fielder, on base after a leadoff double, scored to get the Roadrunners on the board.
UTSA added to its lead in the fourth after a homerun, and proceeded to increase its lead scoring two more runs in the fifth off a double from catcher John Bormann.
The Herd saw a chance in the second when first baseman TJ Diffenderfer (Mount Juliet, Tenn.) doubled with one out, but was left stranded to end the inning.
Another opportunity arose in the sixth, after Bird scored and Leon and Dundon were still aboard. Both were stranded as the inning came to a close.
Starter Michael Taylor (St. Albans, W.Va.) took the loss, tossing 5.2 innings, allowing nine hits and four walks.
Marshall returns to action at 3:00 (ET) Saturday for the second game of the series.
