MORGANTOWN, W. Va.- Marshall baseball was bested by in-state rival West Virginia Wednesday night, falling 10-3.
The Herd rallied in the top of the fourth, plating three runs to get on the board.
Things began for Marshall after junior TJ Diffenderfer (Mount Juliet, Tenn.) was walked and took two extra bases on a Chase Vogelbach (Ft. Myers, Fla.) single that dropped to the edge of the outfield grass.
With runners on the corners, sophomore Matt Reed (Purcellville, Va.) knocked a ball to center field, scoring Diffenderfer for the Herd's first run of the game.
Vogelbach and Reed both came around to score on a two-out two RBI single through the left side from junior Eric Escobedo (Troup, Ga.).
The Mountaineers took the early lead after plating a run in the first after a double, wild pitch, and single off Herd starter Lance Elder (Miami).
WVU added insurance after a three-run second inning and one run fourth.
As the Herd entered the bottom of the fifth, just trailing by two, back-to-back lead off walks, a double, and a throwing error resulted in the Mountaineers plating three to increase the lead to 8-3.
WVU scored two more in the eighth to finalize the score at 10-3.
Marshall will travel to Birmingham, Ala. to face CUSA foe UAB before taking on the Mountaineers again next Wednesday, April 30 at Appalachian Power Park.
