BECKLEY, W.Va. - Marshall baseball got an early morning start in Conference USA action, dropping a close 2-0 contest to UTSA Friday morning at Epling Stadium in Beckley, W.Va. The loss was the first time the Herd was held scoreless this season.
Marshall (6-9, 0-1) and UTSA (10-7, 1-0) combined for just ten hits. The Herd recorded four, with senior Andrew Dundon (Lincoln Park, N.J.) going 2-for-4. Classmates TJ Diffenderfer (Mount Juliet, Tenn.) and Josh King (Troup, Ga.) collected the other two hits of the day.
UTSA used two errors, a wild pitch, passed ball, walk, and single to plate two runs in the top of the third.
Herd starter JD Hammer (Fort Collins, Colo.) suffered the loss, despite allowing just four hits and striking out five in seven innings.
The Roadrunners starter Brock Hartson lasted 8.1 innings, picking up six K in his first win of the season, and right fielder Trent Bowles went 3-for-4.
Freshman Fernando Guerrero (Elizabeth, N.J.) continued his stellar work from the bullpen, fanning two in his single inning of work.
Marshall and UTSA meet again on Saturday at 1 p.m. for the second of the three-game series.
