BECKLEY, W.Va. - Despite outhitting its opponent 12 hits to 10, Marshall baseball (6-10, 0-2) dropped its second conference game of the season, falling 10-5 to UTSA (11-7, 2-0) Saturday at Epling Stadium in Beckley, W.Va.
Junior Robert Fajardo (Miami) turned in a perfect 3-for-3 performance with a double, run, and RBI, and classmate DJ Gee (Seattle) also collected three hits with a double and RBI in the contest. Senior Sergio Leon (Miami) collected two hits with a run and RBI in the loss.
Both teams remained at a stalemate until the fourth inning, when UTSA got on the board courtesy of a homerun by Matt Hilston. Marshall retaliated in the bottom of the frame, taking the lead briefly before another UTSA homer tied the game once more.
In the fifth, the Roadrunners plated four runs to regain control of the game, which they would keep for the remainder of the contest by adding three runs in the sixth as insurance and another two in the ninth.
The Herd chipped away at the UTSA advantage, scoring a run apiece in each the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, but was unable to capitalize and fell 10-5.
Senior Andrew Dundon (Lincoln Park, N.J.) also doubled and scored, and starter Michael Taylor (St. Albans, W.Va.) fanned a career-high eight in four and a third innings.
Marshall looks to avoid the sweep, facing the Roadrunners in the series finale Sunday at 1 p.m. at Epling Stadium.
