BECKLEY, W. Va. - Marshall baseball (6-11) suffered its first sweep of the season, falling 16-8 to UTSA (12-7) on Sunday at Epling Stadium in Beckley, W.Va.
Sophomore Corey Bird (Pinch, W.Va.) and senior TJ Diffenderfer (Mount Juliet, Tenn.) each turned in three hits, and junior Aaron Bossi (St. Louis, Mo.) and sophomore Matt Reed (Purcellville, Va.) collected two.
Senior Josh King (Troup, Ga.) made his long awaited return to the mound, throwing a solid one inning with a strikeout.
It was the first weekend Marshall has not hit at least one home run this season.
UTSA broke the game open in the second inning, plating six runs to take the early lead. Marshall cut the Roadrunners' lead, scoring four in the bottom of the frame.
UTSA scored again in the third, and Marshall retaliated with two to come within one.
Marshall tied the game in the fourth, when freshman Austin Norman (Fairmont, W.Va.) led off with a double down the left field line. He advanced to second after senior Andrew Dundon (Lincoln Park, N.J.) walked, and went to third on a sacrifice bunt from Bossi. Norman scored the equalizer on an RBI groundout from Reed.
UTSA took the lead once more in the sixth, scoring three runs, and added insurance with six in the eighth to secure its 16-8 victory.
The Herd will begin midweek action this week, traveling to Richmond, Ky., Tuesday, March 17 to face Eastern Kentucky and then hosts Morehead State on Wednesday at the Kennedy Center in Huntington.
