RICHMOND, Ky. - Marshall baseball trailed by one run until the eighth inning, but ultimately dropped its first midweek contest of the year 8-4 to Eastern Kentucky in Richmond, Ky.
Junior Aaron Bossi (St. Louis, Mo.) smacked two doubles in the loss, going 2-for-4 with a run, and sophomore Billy Sager (Kenova, W.Va.) recorded his first Herd homer and collected two RBI.
Marshall broke the blank in the third inning, when Sager launched his home run over the right center wall.
The lead was short-lived, as the Colonels plated a run in the bottom of the frame off of a walk, hit-by-pitch, fielder's choice, and an error. EKU then added insurance in the fourth, scoring twice off of two singles and a double.
The Herd cut the deficit, using a Bossi double and RBI groundout from Sager to make the score 3-2. Marshall then tied the game in the sixth, when senior Sergio Leon (Miami) led off the inning with a single, moved to second on a walk, and advanced to third on a fielder's choice.
Leon then scored the equalizer on a single from junior Ryne Dean (Fresno, Calif.)
EKU again wasted no time, taking the lead back in the bottom of the inning after a Colonel home run, and added with another run in the seventh.
Marshall continued to fight back, plating a run in the eighth courtesy of a hit-by-pitch, balk, wild pitch, and error that allowed senior Andrew Dundon (Lincoln Park, N.J.) to move all the way around the diamond.
EKU broke loose in the bottom of the frame, using a bases clearing double to plate three and go up 8-4.
The Herd returns to the diamond Wednesday, facing border-rival Morehead State in its home opener at the YMCA Kennedy Center Field in Huntington, W.Va. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
