CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Marshall baseball (8-18, 2-7 C-USA) dropped a close game Sunday afternoon, falling 3-1 to FIU (13-15, 5-4 C-USA) at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston.
The Herd again threatened in the ninth, with two men on and one out, pinch hitter Ryne Dean (Fresno, Calif.) ripped a ball over the right field wall. It would have been the Herd's second consecutive walk-off victory, but it was ruled foul, and Marshall ultimately fell 3-1.
Senior Sergio Leon (Miami) collected two hits and scored the Herd's lone run on a wild pitch in the ninth.
It was a pitching duel until FIU broke the blank in the fifth, plating a run off after a walk and double down left field. The Panthers scored again in the seventh, and added insurance with a solo homerun in the ninth.
Marshall started the ninth looking to rally. Leon singled, and then a single from senior TJ Diffenderfer (Mount Juliet, Tenn.) sent him to third. He scored off a wild pitch as Diffenderfer moved up a base, and a walk to junior DJ Gee (Seattle) put two on for Dean.
The Herd will travel to Oxford, Ohio, for a midweek contest against Miami (Oh) on Wednesday, April 2, and then heads to Boca Raton, Fla., to face C-USA foe Florida Atlantic.
