MARSHALL
Doc Holliday, head coach
On the team's performance:
"I thought our football team went out there today and played the way they should have played and I thought the results were what they should have been. You'll have a little concern as you always do going out there with a freshman quarterback and I thought he took what the defense gave us and made the throws where they were supposed to go and he played well for a young freshman."
On quarterback Chase Litton's performance:
"I thought he made all the throws. He made good decisions, which is critical and he put the ball where it was supposed to go. That's where it starts. He got the ball to 11 different receivers, which was good. Then he did a good job on the option plays and third down situations, which is critical. He took care of the ball too. I thought for a first game it was tremendous."
"He sees the field well, he's got a quick release, he runs well and he doesn't let a lot bother him. For a true freshman, he handled it I thought extremely well and I'm sure he will get better."
"Some guys have 'it.' They've kind of got that look in their eyes and they carry themselves a certain way. He seems to have 'it.'"
On wide receiver Deandre Reaves:
"I think he played well out there. We've talked about getting him involved more and we tried to on punt and kick returns, but a lot of the kicks didn't go very far. He went in there at slot receiver and started and he played well for us."
On defensive adjustments:
"I thought the defense settled in after the first touchdown. Their quarterback was a pain in the neck. He is quick and hard to get down. I thought we did a good job containing him, Old Dominion and Rutgers didn't do a great job containing him. We had some guys that were able to chase him down though."
On wide receivers:
"At the end of the day, I think we are pretty good at wide-out. We have to find a way to get the ball in their hands, not only vertical but also on hitches and slants. We were able to hit those and I thought our quarterback did a good job of getting the ball where it belonged."
Devon Johnson, senior running back
On the Herd's offensive line:
"I feel I got the best offensive line in the country and I know I got the best offensive line in the conference so I knew they were going to get their job done."
About today's win:
"We knew we had to bounce back but we can't get complacent on this win and we got to come back even hungrier for next week."
On Chase Litton:
"He didn't seem like it was his first game starting as a freshman. I mean it seems as if he is a junior and has been playing many games."
Chase Litton, freshman quarterback
On his first start:
"When I first ran out of the tunnel, I was a little antsy, but when the first ball was snapped, it was go-time and I knew I got to play football."
On his first time playing in the last two years:
"Today was fun. I thought I would be a little rusty but I came out and did well. Also the offensive lineman made my life easy."
On emotions when Norfolk State got the ball first:
"They came out hard and physical, and ended up scoring, so we needed to respond. The drive got killed because of penalties but we got three points and seven points after the next drive."
Evan McKelvey, redshirt senior linebacker
On heading to Kent State, and playing on the road:
"We got to play like we have a chip on our shoulders and every team is going to give their best shots against us. It's going to be a completely different game."
On consistent defense:
"We have to get better and better. The defense is not where we want to be so we have to put the pieces together."
On what changed after allowing a touchdown on the first drive:
"It was just a miscommunication on the defense and we just didn't get it done, but after that, everything else was easy and smooth like we planned."
Deandre Reaves, redshirt senior wide receiver
On adjusting to a new quarterback:
"It wasn't difficult at all. All of the quarterbacks do a heck of a job putting ball at the right place for us. As receivers, it's our job to go and get that ball."
On his second touchdown:
"[Chase] Litton placed the ball at the right place and no matter what, the receivers need to catch it. I just jumped up and it fell into my hands."
NORFOLK STATE
Latrell Scott, head coach
On the Spartans' performance:
"Honestly, we didn't play very well. You have to credit Marshall, they have a good football team. Other than the first drive, we didn't play well enough on either side of the ball to win today."
On playing three consecutive FBS opponents:
"I think our kids have handled this schedule as well as anyone could possibly handle. I'm proud of every one of them and I look forward to going into battle with these guys in conference play."
On moving forward:
"We've just got to get better, we've got a huge game next week at home. These kids have played three road games in a row and I think just going back and playing in front of our fans, friends and family will have them very excited."
Deon King, senior linebacker
On his performance:
"I still need to get better on a lot of things; I still need to tone up on things as well. I'd give my performance about a 'D.'"
On what he could have done differently during the game:
"When they scored that first touchdown, I was supposed to be in my drop, and I just wasn't there. Me and my teammates just need to make sure that we're in the right place at the right time."
On moving forward:
"I know we're just going to keep getting better, keep tuning up, look at the film, critique it, and I know we're going to do alright."
