HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall's 2016 baseball schedule, announced Monday, is highlighted by six teams that won 2015 conference championships and seven teams that made NCAA regional appearances.
"The players and coaches are extremely excited about this year's schedule," 10th-year Herd Coach Jeff Waggoner said. "With the challenge of a very competitive non-conference schedule that includes seven NCAA regional teams from last year, in addition to the always-demanding Conference USA schedule, we are going to need our top returnees to step up and lead us."
The schedule features 17 games against five reigning conference champions and seven 2015 NCAA entrants. The Herd will be home for eight of the 17 games, which include Lehigh (March 5-6), Morehead State (March 15), Florida Atlantic (April 15-17 at Beckley), and Ohio (April 20). Marshall travels to Florida A&M (Feb. 19-21), Coastal Carolina (Feb. 26), FIU (March 24-26), Morehead State (March 30) and Ohio (May 10).
Marshall's home schedule also is highlighted by four teams that qualified for the 2015 C-USA Tournament and a 12-game homestand in March. The Herd opens at the YMCA Kennedy Center on Route 2 in Huntington, as it welcomes Brown (March 11-13) and Eastern Kentucky (March 22), while playing conference opponent Southern Miss (March 18-20) in Charleston at Appalachian Power Park.
MU will also play in Charleston against Louisiana Tech (April 1-3) and West Virginia (April 5). The Herd returns back to Huntington for a midweek game against Eastern Kentucky (April 19). The Herd rounds out the home schedule with three-game series against UAB (May 6-8) and Old Dominion (May 19-21) in Charleston, and a midweek game on May 17 against Wake Forest at Epling Stadium in Beckley.
The Herd's 24-game road slate includes trips to Florida, South Carolina and five C-USA opponents. After traveling to Florida A&M, Marshall goes to Myrtle Beach to face Liberty (Feb. 26-27) at Coastal Carolina. The Herd begins its C-USA road schedule at FIU, then visits UTSA (April 8-10), Charlotte (April 22-24), Middle Tennessee (April 29-May 1) and Western Kentucky (May 13-15). Marshall also plays in midweek games at Morehead State, West Virginia (April 26) and Ohio.
The eight-team C-USA Tournament will be held at Pete Taylor Park on the Southern Miss campus from May 25-29. It's the third straight season and the sixth time in C-USA history the tourney will be played in Hattiesburg, Miss.
