Herd Track and Field Completes Double Meets

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall track and field team split up and competed in separate meets this weekend at the Virginia Challenge hosted by the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va., and the James Madison Invitational in Harrisonburg, Va.
In the Virginia Challenge, which was heavily represented by Power Five programs, the Herd picked up one win, as freshman Heidi Heiniger won the open javelin throw at a distance of 42.90-meters.
Other impressive finishes included freshman Elena Marchand in the open shot put, who finished fourth with a throw of 14.31m. Fellow freshman Hasana Clark (13.63m) finished ninth. Junior Antonique Butler finished eighth in the triple jump invite (12.07m). Freshman Lauren George finished 13th in the open long jump (5.52m).
In running events, senior Asia Bange finished 16th in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.03 seconds. In the 100m dash, juniors Kametra Byrd finished 30th (12.23) and Hope Julmiste finished 32nd (12.24). For relays, the 4x100m relay finished in 10th (46.45) and the 4x400m relay finished 12th (3:50.32).
At the James Madison Invitational, the Herd picked up one win as Junior Caitlyn Owings won the High Jump (1.55m).
Other top finishes in field events included a second-place finish in the triple jump by sophomore Melany Belot (11.43m), and a third-place finish in the hammer throw by Mercedes Dowell with a long throw of 45.16m. Freshman Savannah Keffer finished sixth in the javelin throw (24.50m).
Freshman Whitney McAtee had a solid day with three top-ten finishes. She finished sixth in the shot put, with a long throw of 11.96m. McAtee also finished seventh in the discus throw (38.08m) and ninth in the hammer throw (37.36m).
In running events, junior Andrea Porter registered the highest finish, placing third in the 1,500m (4:44.36). The Herd had a platoon of top-ten finishes in the 1500m along with Porter, with sophomore Madeline Armstrong (8th), freshman Taylor Craigo (9th), and sophomore Samantha Graffius (10th).
Freshmen Adriana Cook and Kayla Haywood each had top-ten finishes, with Cook placing fifth in the 5000m run (17:59.67) and Haywood finishing seventh in the 100m dash (12.30) and ninth in the 200m dash (25.74). Other top-ten finishes included sophomore Andrea Chidester, placing eighth in both the 100m (12.34) and the 200m (25.71). The 4x400 team ran a sixth-place time of 4:07.87, finishing sixth.
"We split up again today and had different disciplines perform well at different events," Marshall coach Jeff Small said. "Our throwers led the way for us at UVA, while the distance runners shined at JMU."
