CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Marshall baseball (21-16, 10-8 C-USA) was to held to one hit on Sunday as it dropped a 5-0 decision to the Charlotte 49ers (17-24, 7-11 C-USA) at Hayes Stadium.
Despite the loss, Marshall still takes the series by winning the first two games. The Herd has won three-straight road Conference USA series. Also by taking two of three, Marshall ties the best 37-game start since the 1988 season that was coached by Jack Cook. The 1988 team finished the season with a 23-17 record.
The lone hit for the Herd came in the first at-bat, as Corey Bird (Elkview, W.Va.) laid down a well-placed bunt and legged it out for a single. Marshall was able to get a total of five more batters on base by two fielder's choice, two walks and a hit by pitch.
Charlotte took a commanding four-run lead in the bottom of the fifth. With two runners on, Brett Netzer hit a three-run home run to right field. Later in the inning, T.J. Nichting scored after a throwing error by Robert Fajardo (Miami).
The 49ers tacked on one more run in the bottom of the sixth on a ground-rule double with two outs.
Starting pitcher Joshua Shapiro (Columbus, Ohio) went 5.2 innings with six strikeouts. The freshman pitcher allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits. Shapiro (1-3) was charged with the loss. Junior Burris Warner (Auburndale, Fla.) went 2.1 innings and didn't allow a hit, while striking out one.
Charlotte was led by starting pitcher Josh Maciejewski (4-4), who tossed a complete game shutout with seven strikeouts. Netzer was 2-for-4 with a team-high four RBIs.

Marshall heads north to Morgantown to wrap up its season series against the West Virginia Mountaineers. The Herd dropped a 5-4 decision in 10 innings earlier this season to WVU.
