@HerdTFXC Completes Indoor Season at C-USA Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.-The Marshall University track and field team wrapped up its indoor portion of the season Sunday at the 2017 Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
As a team, the Herd placed seventh out of 13 schools with a total of 41 points. This is the highest ever team finish and most points scored for Marshall at the C-USA Indoor Championships.
The Herd had two individual second place finishes. Freshman Safiyyah Mitchell placed second in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles with her time of 8.69 seconds. Additionally, sophomore Elena Marchand finished second in the shot put with a mark of 14.95 meters (49 feet, 0.75 inches).
In running events, other than Mitchell, the Herd had two other qualifiers from Saturday's preliminaries. Junior Barkley Castro placed fourth in the 800m finals with a time of 2:15.83. Senior Danielle Wright finished eighth in the 60m hurdles finals with her time of 8.91.
In other running events, sophomore Adriana Cook followed up her school record-breaking performance from Saturday in the 5,000-meter run, as she placed 11th in the 3,000m run on Saturday. Her time of 10:00.11 just missed her school record of 10:00.06 set earlier this season. Senior Andrea Porter finished 13th in the event with a time of 10:03.91. Senior Amber Govey finished 40th with a time of 10:51.98.
The 4x400m relay team of freshmen Christiana Dogan, Safiyyah Mitchell, Danere'a White, and junior Brianna Hargrove finished fifth with a time of 3:48.77.
Marshall athletes competed in three field events on Sunday; the high jump, shot put, and triple jump.
In the triple jump, senior Antonique Butler finished fifth with a jump of 12.37m (47 feet, 7 inches). Freshman Denisha West took ninth with a mark of 11.87m (38 feet, 11.50 inches).
In the high jump, freshman Torie Derrow took sixth with a mark of 1.71 meters (5 feet, 7.25 inches). Sophomore Sarah Bever finished 10th with a jump of 1.66 meters (5 feet, 5.25 inches).
In the shot put, alongside Marchand featured sophomores Hasana Clark, Whitney McAtee, and freshman Ericka Budd. Clark finished in 13th with a throw of 13.21m (43 feet, 4.25 inches). McAtee finished 20th with a mark of 11.85m (38 feet, 10.50 inches). Budd finished 21st with a throw of 11.00m (36 feet, 1.25 inches).
"We really had a good weekend," head coach Jeff Small said. "We are very proud of our kids. This is our highest team finish and the most points we have ever scored at the Conference USA Indoor Championships. We have a very young team and are really looking forward to having a great outdoor season."

Outdoor season begins on March 17 when the team travels to the Bob Davidson Spring Kick-Off hosted by High Point University in High Point, North Carolina.
