HUNTINGTON, W.Va.—Marshall cross country is set to run in the team's fourth and final regular season meet Friday at the VertCross Invitational hosted by High Point University.

The meet takes place in Kernersville, North Carolina and is set to begin at 4 p.m. for the women's 5K and will continue at 4:45 p.m. for the men's 8K.

"I can't believe we're already at our last regular season meet," assistant coach Caleb Bowen said. "The season has flown by as it always does. But we're really excited, everyone is continuing to look better every week and that's a really positive thing as we hit this point of the season."

In the last outing for the Herd at the Paul Short Invitational, Marshall runners competed against the largest field it saw all season. Over 1,000 runners from over 100 schools competed at the meet, with Alex Minor leading the men in the gold division race as he finished 57th out of 359 runners with a personal best 8K time of 25:21.

Freshman Madelyn Garrison looks to become the first Marshall runner since the team joined the Conference USA to pace the team for the first four team meets as a freshman. She led the team for the third straight meet at the Paul Short Invitational with a 6K time of 23:37.

The Herd will compete against a smaller field at the VertCross Invitational, a meet that will simulate the Conference USA Championship meet which looms in two weeks. 22 schools will compete at the meet.

The Herd has historically competed well at the VertCross Invitational. Last season, the men finished fifth out of 17 schools and the women finished sixth out of 16 schools. A season before, the men finished seventh out of 22 schools while the women finished eighth out of 19 teams.

Scheduled competing teams:
Appalachian State, Campbell, Charleston Southern, Claflin, Coastal Carolina, Coker, East Tennessee State, Ferrum, Guilford (M), High Point, Longwood, Louisburg College, Marshall, North Carolina A&T, North Carolina Wesleyan, Patrick Henry, Presbyterian, Radford, Sweet Briar (W), UNCG, VMI and William Peace.

Quotes from assistant coach Caleb Bowen

On the men's team
"Our guys have really gotten better for the distance. It's a smaller meet which will simulate conference being less teams. We're looking for pack running, but more specifically running all together at the front of the race instead of the middle like they did two weeks ago at the Paul Short Invitational. We're excited for them."

On the women's team
"On the women's side, I think this will be a good course for them to take a chance and go for it. Put themselves in a good position to run at the front of the pack and I hope they trust in themselves because they can get up there and run towards the front."
