HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall volleyball team swept the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders (26-24, 25-23, 25-19) Sunday afternoon in the Cam Henderson Center.
The Thundering Herd improves to 10-12 for the year and 3-5 in Conference USA. The Blue Raiders fall to 5-15 overall and 0-7 in conference action.
"I'm really happy for our players to get this W," Herd head coach Mitch Jacobs said. "Middle came out with a lot of energy and things could have certainly been different in the first two sets. I'm so proud of the way our kids pushed at the end of sets one and two or this could have become another really long match. And they just played a great long match on Friday.
"Not sure they had a ton more left in their tanks. Having to travel and then come home is never easy. Can't say enough how they tackled the tough travel to come out with this win."
Freshman Sarah Schank recorded 13 digs and added eight kills while hitting at a .316 clip. Redshirt sophomore Ciara Debell led the Herd with 17 kills and hit at .293. Freshman setter Gabrielle Coulter had 29 assists and added five kills. Junior libero Amber Weber led with 14 digs.
Weber also made several calls on long serves from Middle to allow her team to get the easy point. The Blue Raiders committed 16 service errors.
The first set started off as a back-and-forth affair until Marshall grabbed the lead at 7-6. Middle Tennessee fought back to tie it up at 16-16. The score was tied six more times, with the Blue Raiders regaining the lead after each tie. Middle Tennessee then reached set-point at 24-22, causing Marshall to take a timeout. The fifth Blue Raider service error of the set gave the ball back to the Herd now trailing by one. Two-straight kills by Debell and then an attack error by Middle Tennessee, earned the win in set one for the Herd.
The Blue Raiders led throughout the second set, including leading by as many as five (12-7), until Marshall began another meticulous comeback. A kill by Schank tied the match at 21-21 for the first time since the score was 1-1. The set was tied two more times with the last one coming at 23-23. A kill by Coulter and another by Debell got the win for the Herd as Marshall now led 2-0.
The third set started off close until Coulter recorded two-straight kills on surprise attacks that caught the Blue Raiders off guard, and gave Marshall an early 4-2 lead. The Herd built out its lead to as high as eight at 16-8. The Blue Raiders then rallied with a 5-0 run that forced a Marshall timeout with the score at 16-13. After the timeout, the Herd finished out the set by outscoring Middle Tennessee 9-6, with Debell ending the match with a power shot for her 17th kill.
Marshall returns to the court on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 12 p.m., for a home match against the UTSA Roadrunners.
