Herd hits the road for next two matches

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall volleyball team fell in four sets (18-25, 21-25, 25-20, 16-25) to the UTSA Roadrunners, Sunday afternoon in the Cam Henderson Center.

The Thundering Herd is now 10-13 overall and 3-6 in Conference USA. The Roadrunners improve to 16-5 and 8-1 in conference action.

"UTSA is the best transition team in our league," Herd head coach Mitch Jacobs said. "They're fast, from offense to defense, from defense to offense, and we knew we had to play at an optimum and there were times that we did. In those times, I thought we were pretty equal.

'There were times that we weren't at that level, and they showed why they're 8-1 in the league."

Redshirt sophomore Ciara Debell led the Herd with 14 kills and added 12 digs, while freshman Sarah Schank recorded eight kills and 22 digs. Freshman setter Gabrielle Coulter led with 21 assists despite missing some time after going down in the second set with an injury. Coulter returned in the third set and played sparingly, subbing back-and-forth with freshman Autumn Elswick and redshirt junior Jayden Jacobs. Jacobs finished with eight assists while Elswick had four.

Defensively, junior Amber Weber led in digs with 23 while freshman Isa Dostal had three solo blocks and assisted on two others.

After falling in the first two sets, Marshall pulled off a great comeback to take the third set and force a fourth. The Herd trailed 7-1 and then went on a 10-4 run to tie the set at 11-11. After the set was tied again at 15-15, Marshall doubled up the Roadrunners for a 10-5 finish to force the match to a fourth set. Schank had four kills and hit at a .571 clip in set three. The defense played very well as Weber had eight digs, Debell with seven and Schank recorded six. Dostal also had two solo blocks and assisted on two more.

UTSA pulled away in the fourth set to take the match.

Marshall hits the road for the next two matches with trips to Southern Miss (Oct. 26) and North Texas (Oct. 28). Marshall returns to the Cam Henderson Center on Nov. 2 against Florida Atlantic.
