Volleyball Drops Road Contest at Southern Miss

Herd falls in four sets to Golden Eagles
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — The Marshall volleyball team was defeated by Southern Miss Friday night in four sets (25-20, 19-25, 25-21, 25-17) at Reed Green Coliseum.
Marshall (10-14, 3-7 C-USA) was led by Ciara Debell, who tallied 17 kills and 10 digs. Ivana Trencheva added 10 kills, while Gabrielle Coulter recorded 43 assists. Amber Weber had 14 digs. Southern Miss (13-12, 5-5 C-USA) was led by Kylie Grandy, who had a match-high 22 kills. Alexis Coombs added 14 kills, while Sarah Bell had 54 assists for the Golden Eagles.
Marshall had an early 7-6 lead in the first set after Debell and Shelby Conley tallied three early kills apiece. Southern Miss responded with an 8-2 run to take a 14-9 lead, forcing a Marshall timeout in the process. Marshall never got closer than a four-point deficit for the remainder of the set and dropped the opener, 25-20.
Marshall opened the second set by taking six of the first eight points, but the Golden Eagles responded with a 5-1 run to tie the set at 7-7. A run of Golden Eagles errors pushed Marshall in front midway through the set, 15-11, and forced a Southern Miss timeout. The Golden Eagles made a late run and cut Marshall's lead to three, 21-18, but it was not enough. The Herd took the second set, 25-19, to even the match at one set apiece.
The Herd got off to a slow start in the third set and burned an early timeout trailing 8-6. Southern Miss then increased its lead to 13-8 following a 5-2 run. The Herd got a combined block by Isa Dostal and Coulter followed by a kill by Debell to cut the deficit to 13-11, but Southern Miss took eight of the next 12 points to increase its lead to 21-15. The Golden Eagles held on to win the third set, 25-21, and took a 2-1 lead in the match.
Marshall took a 6-3 lead to open the fourth set, but Southern Miss responded with a run of its own to take a 12-9 lead. After a Herd run, which consisted of kills by Debell and Mion Weldon, cut Southern Miss' lead to 15-13, the Golden Eagles went on a 7-1 run, increasing their advantage to 21-14. Southern Miss took the set, 25-17, to win the match, 3-1.
Marshall returns to action Sunday afternoon at North Texas. First serve from the North Texas Volleyball Center is set for 1 p.m.
