DENTON, Texas – The Marshall volleyball team fell in three sets (21-25, 15-25, 18-25) to the North Texas Mean Green, Sunday afternoon from the North Texas Volleyball Center.
The Thundering Herd is now 10-15 overall and 3-8 in Conference USA play. The Mean Green improve to 11-15 overall and 7-3 in conference action.
"North Texas is rolling right now," Herd head coach Mitch Jacobs said. "Although we put up a pretty good fight at times we are just struggling to maintain a high level. Next week is obviously do or die for us, so I'm hoping they know how backed into the corner we are with no option but to fight for our season's life.
"I know it's in this group, but there needs to be a real paradigm shift in the way we sustain our mental level on the court."
Junior libero Amber Weber led the way defensively with 22 digs and helped to keep the Herd in the game with many tough plays. Redshirt sophomore Ciara Debell finished with 11 kills and senior Lauren Mattmuller was next with eight. Freshman Gabrielle Coulter recorded 31 assists and three kills.
Marshall began the first set with the early 7-5 lead until North Texas fought back and took the lead for good at 9-8. The Herd trailed by as much as six at 14-8, but rallied and pulled within one at 18-17. The Mean Green held on and finished off the first set, 25-21. Debell had six kills in the first frame.
After some back and forth to begin the second set, North Texas grabbed the lead at 11-10 and then pulled away and went into the break with a 2-0 lead.
Marshall fought back in the third set and pulled within one at 18-17. North Texas called a timeout and then went on a 6-0 run and finished off the day with a 25-18 win in set three.
The Herd returns to the Cam Henderson Center for its final two home matches of the regular season against Florida Atlantic (Nov. 2) and FIU (Nov. 4). Marshall then travels to take on WVU (Nov. 7) and then ends the regular season at Charlotte (Nov. 9).
