JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Marshall men's soccer team is back on the road Wednesday for a non-conference match at the East Tennessee State Buccaneers. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
The Thundering Herd enters the match with a record of 3-4-2. The Buccaneers come in at 4-5.
The game will be broadcast on the SoCon Digital Network.
"We're in a good place right now and really looking forward to the match," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "I thought the guys did really well against ODU. We were 2-1 up when they got the red card, and we managed the match well as a counter attacking team like that were still dangerous even with ten men.
"We've scored seven goals in our last two matches, so we are starting to flow in that department. ETSU looks like a good side, with some solid attacking players, so hopefully we can keep them quiet and continue our purple patch in front of goal."
Last time out, Marshall won 4-2 over the Old Dominion Monarchs. The Herd began the match trailing 1-0 before sophomore Jamil Roberts stole the ball away from the keeper and sent it in for his first goal of the season in the 26th minute. Less than two minutes later, junior Illal Osmanu scored his second header of the year to give Marshall the lead.
After the red card against Old Dominion, the Herd still dealt with an attacking team as the Monarchs evened the match in the 50th minute. After battling back and forth, sophomore Collin Mocyunas scored his first career goal in the 65th minute to give Marshall the lead at 3-2. Just for good measure, freshman Kelan Swales took a pass from fellow freshman JP Rylah on a break-away and put it passed the keeper with one second to go.
Four players have now scored two goals this season for Marshall in junior Jonas Westmeyer, freshman Gianni Bouzoukis, Swales and Osmanu. Five more players have all chipped in with one goal each. Redshirt junior Paulo Pita continues to be the workhorse in goal for the Herd. Pita has 28 saves and three shutouts.
ETSU is coming off a 3-0 loss to No. 7 Kentucky on Sept. 26. Prior to the loss to the Wildcats, the Buccaneers defeated Lipscomb (3-1) and Georgia Southern (2-1). ETSU begins Southern Conference action on Saturday, Oct. 6 at Wofford. The Buccaneers have scored 11 goals this season and Danny Barlow leads the squad with five. Bruno Andrade is second with three. Josh Perryman has been the lone player in the net with 28 saves, 15 goals allowed, a .651 save percentage and two shutouts.
Following the Wednesday night match, Marshall will get a short break as it won't return to the pitch until Tuesday, Oct. 9, at home against Purdue Fort Wayne.
