JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Marshall men's soccer team lost a close match, 2-1, Wednesday night at East Tennessee State from Summers-Taylor Stadium. Freshman JP Rylah scored his second career goal.
The Thundering Herd is now 3-5-2 while the Buccaneers improve to 5-5.
"We have to change our mentality," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "It's a slow process. We started way too sluggishly. We need to get up for these midweek games after a big conference game. Every match demands focus. Secondly, this is the third time this season we have given away a lead and then gone on to lose the match.
"It's not good enough."
ETSU began the match controlling possession for about the first 10 minutes, taking the first three shots of the night. Marshall then began to take control, pushing the ball into its attacking half. The Herd then fired off four chances beginning in the 15th minute to the 24th minute. The first half ended scoreless and the Bucs held the edge in total shots 5-4. ETSU had the only shot on goal and redshirt junior keeper Paulo Pita was there for the save.
Both teams came out in the second half with more urgency and speed. Marshall attempted two corner kicks early on in the half, but could not convert as ETSU cleared the ball away. Rylah broke the scoreless tie by sending a shot into the left corner on a headed pass by junior Illal Osmanu. The goal came in the 76th minute and put the Herd up 1-0.
The Buccaneers responded just three minutes and 11 seconds later with the equalizer, and then attacked again with another score 58 seconds after the first, to take a 2-1 lead. ETSU held on for the final nine minutes and 59 seconds for its fifth win of the season.
Marshall returns to the pitch on Tuesday, Oct. 9, against Purdue Fort Wayne in the friendly confines of Hoops Family Field. Kickoff for the midweek, non-conference match is set for 5 p.m.
