Pair becomes fifth duo in school history to achieve accomplishment
BOCA RATON, Fla.—Marshall cross country competed Saturday in the 2018 Conference USA Air Force Reserve Cross Country Championships hosted by Florida Atlantic. The meet took place at the Burt Aaronson South Country Regional Park.
On the men's side, out of 11 schools, Marshall finished eighth with a point total of 196. On the women's side, out of 13 schools, the Herd finished 11th with a point total of 332.
Senior Nick Schmidt earned second-team All-Conference USA honors with his 14th place finish and time of 24:58.76. Junior Alex Minor finished 20th and earned third-team All-Conference USA honors with a time of 25:31.11.
Schmidt, who also earned All-C-USA honors last season, became only the fourth Marshall runner in school history to place on multiple All-C-USA teams. He joined on Saturday the list of Matt Schiffbauer, David Caldwell, and Daniel Green. He is the first Marshall runner to make the second-team since Caldwell in 2012.
Additionally on Saturday for only the fifth time in school history, multiple runners earned All-C-USA honors for the Thundering Herd in the same season. The previous instances of that happening was in 2008 (Eric Frohnapfel, Schiffbauer), 2010 (Caldwell, Schiffbauer), 2016 (Adriana Cook, Andrea Porter, Green) and 2017 (Green, Schmidt).
For the men, following Schmidt and Minor was sophomore Joel Krznaric in 50th with a time of 27:08.70. Sophomore Coy Smith finished fourth on the team in 63rd with a time of 27:59.27. Freshman Ryan Vaught finished right behind him in 64th with a time of 28:04.80.
On the women's side, the top-two finishers remained the same as it did throughout the regular season. Freshman Madelyn Garrison led in 48th with a 5K time of 18:54.68. Fellow freshman Alexandra Evans finished 77th with a time of 19:59.54.

Assistant coach Caleb Bowen on the meet
"Extremely excited about Nick and Alex, they both ran the best races of their careers. They put themselves in a great position early on, moved up like they were supposed to, and had enough left in the tank to solidify their All-Conference USA spots.
"On the ladies side, I'm really excited about Maddy's and Alex's races, but I'm even more proud of the entire team's race. From top to bottom, everybody ran better than my expectations. Conditions were tough but I think we handled the conditions as well as anyone could have.
"Biggest surpises of the meet were Joel stepping up to be our number three guy and Abbie [Short] running the best race of her season.
"Disappointed in the men's team place, but considering we have five out of nine that had never been to the conference championship race, this was a great learning experience moving forward for next year where we hope to finish much higher. Similarly on the women's side, five of seven had never been to a conference meet and moving forward it's just going to help us be tougher and more equipped to run stronger going forward."
Senior Nick Schmidt on his race
"It was a great day. Conditions were tough, it was hot, but everyone had to run in the heat. There's a good Marshall history, and it's really awesome to join the history of guys like Schiffbauer and Caldwell. I hope it just motivates our younger guys. We have a young team, it definitely motivates Dan [Green] and Alex [Minor] for next year, unfortunately without me but I'm really excited. I honestly watched highlights of our men's basketball team defeating Wichita State this morning to motivate me."
