HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall men's basketball dominated North Carolina A&T, 95-71, Monday night at the Cam Henderson Center to close out a three-game homestand.
Marshall had five players in double-figure scoring for the first-time this season as it moves to 4-0 to start the season for the second time under fifth-year head coach Dan D'Antoni. The Aggies fall to 0-5 on the season.
"We played a good first half," D'Antoni said. "The ball moved quickly. We got to play a lot of players. That's a hard thing to do. I think the hardest thing to do is to maintain players in a rhythm while substituting multiple players, but we did it pretty well tonight."
Senior guards Jon Elmore and C.J. Burks led the way with 18 and 15 points, respectively, with six makes each from the field. Elmore collected five boards and five assists, while Burks had five steals, four assists and three rebounds.
"Games like that are fun," Elmore said. "Everyone gets to play. The crowds into it. The Henderson Center is turning into what I believe is one of the best environments in all of college basketball. When you pack this place up I don't think you can beat it."
Sophomore forward Darius George scored 13 points on a five of nine shooting night off the bench. George also grabbed five boards, four assists and had a pair of takeaways.
Sophomore forward Jannson Williams and redshirt freshman Iran Bennett each had 11 points in the victory. Williams went a perfect three for three from the field, with two three-pointers, while Bennett had a five of nine shooting night.
The Herd started the contest on a 10-2 run with three-point buckets by Burks and Williams with a pair of layups added by Bennett.
The Aggies pulled within three at the 14:52 mark of the first-half with a made three by Terry Harris, but that would be the closest they would come for the rest of the contest as Marshall led by double-digits with 10:45 left in the opening half and maintained the double-figure lead through the rest of the contest.
The Herd began the second-half on an 11-0 run in the first four minutes. NC A&T pulled within 19 with 9:36 left in the game, but the Aggies saw their smallest deficit of the half disappear as the Herd rallied on a 17-3 run capped off by a three by junior forward Christian Thieneman with 4:49 remaining to give the Herd their largest lead of the evening with a 34-point margin, 87-53.
The Herd scored 39 points off 22 turnovers, while only giving up eight points on 11 giveaways. Marshall also assisted on 22 of 34 makes from the field and had 14 steals to just seven Aggie takeaways.
