MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Marshall volleyball team lost in four sets (25-18, 18-25, 23-25, 17-25) to the WVU Mountaineers, Wednesday night.
The Thundering Herd is now 10-18 overall and WVU improves to 11-14.
"I am very proud of the team for leaving everything they had out on the floor," Herd head coach Mitch Jacobs said. "We came out and we were on fire. WVU made some adjustments, they had a great block and that gave us fits. I think every other aspect of the game we were pretty equal. When you have a big block like they do it wears on you.
"I think Ciara and Amber were the best players on the floor. Their effort was tremendous and probably some of the best of the year and it was special to watch. I think our setters did the best job they have done since we have had to go to the 6-2. I think Shelby and Lolo (Mattmuller) gave everything they had. They were matched with players in front of them that have five inches on them and they gave everything they had.
"Ivana had a big kill for set one. She got blocked a few times through two and three and got smarter in four and stayed away from the trouble. Michaela's first start in the middle tonight and she worked her heart out. That is the biggest thing to take away from tonight. We have been struggling but they really came together tonight and gave it all. Very proud of them."
Redshirt sophomore Ciara Debell led offensively with 18 kills and hit at a .319 clip. Senior Shelby Conley and junior Ivana Trencheva added seven kills each. Redshirt junior Jayden Jacobs finished with 19 assists and freshman Autumn Elswick had 14.
On the defensive side, junior libero Amber Weber had her 15th match of the season with 20 or more kills, finishing with 21. The Herd recorded eight total blocks and junior Michaela Ahlenslager had five.
Marshall came out on fire in the first set jumping out to an early 6-1 lead. WVU closed to within three at 13-10 but the Herd rallied again to extend the lead and grab the eventual seven-point win. Debell finished with seven kills in the set.
Sets two and three and back-and-forth battles throughout most of each period. The Mountaineers were able to close out and take a 2-1 lead. WVU led throughout the fourth set to take the win.
Marshall returns to the court on Friday, Nov. 9 at 6 p.m., at the Charlotte 49ers in the season-finale.
