Volleyball Set For Final Road Match at Charlotte

CHARLOTTE – The Marshall volleyball team is on the road for the final time in the 2018 season to face the Charlotte 49ers. First serve from the Halton Arena is set for Friday at 6 p.m.
 
The Thundering Herd enters the match with an overall record of 10-18 and 3-10 in Conference USA. The 49ers come in at 15-14 overall and 5-8 in conference play.
 
The match will be broadcast live on CUSAtv.
 
Marshall and Charlotte met back on Sept. 21 in Huntington, and the 49ers came away with a five-set win. Redshirt sophomore Ciara Debell led the Herd with 17 kills in the match and junior Ivana Trencheva recorded a season-high 14. Senior Lauren Mattmuller added 11. Junior Amber Weber finished with 24 digs. For Charlotte, Reena Richardson led the way with 26 kills while Yumi Garcia had 28 digs. Nya Steele finished with 51 assists.
 
The Herd is coming off a tough four-set loss at WVU on Wednesday. Marshall took the first set 25-18 and took advantage of 12 Mountaineer errors in the set. WVU then took the next three sets to get the win.
 
For the season, Debell leads Marshall with 424 kills, 18 service aces and is second with 223 digs and 46 total blocks. Debell is tied for the lead in Conference USA with 4.28 kills per set. Senior Shelby Conley is second in kills with 176 and fellow classmate Mattmuller is third with 169. Redshirt junior Jayden Jacobs and freshman Autumn Elswick continue to be a 1-2 punch at setter for the Herd and have 95 and 89 assists this season, respectively.
 
On the defense side, Weber has 535 digs including 15 matches with 20 or more. She is second on the team with 17 service aces. Freshman Isa Dostall leads the Herd in blocks with 54 total.
 
Charlotte is fighting for the eighth and final spot in the Conference USA Championship Tournament and is coming off back-to-back three-set losses to Rice (Nov. 2) and UTEP (Nov. 4), both on the road. Richardson still leads the 49ers in kills with 428 and is fourth in C-USA in kills per set with 3.82. Molly Shaw is second on the team with 224 kills and Jocelyn Stoner is right behind with 217. Steele has recorded 1,093 assists this season.
 
On defense, Garcia has 644 digs to lead the way and Tyra Galloway leads in total blocks with 144. The 49ers have recorded 306 blocks this year and lead the conference.
