TEANECK, N.J. – The Marshall women's soccer team fought hard but in the end fell 1-0 Thursday night at Fairleigh Dickinson in the 2018 season-opener.

The Thundering Herd begins the year 0-1 and the Knights start off 1-0.

"Tough loss for sure," Herd head coach Kevin Long said. "The difference between Youngstown (the final exhibition match) and tonight was huge, and a major step forward. We had a lot of chances to score through the run of play and gave up the goal on a corner.

"Both keepers came up big early to keep the game tied."

The teams battled through a scoreless first half with each squad feeling things out to find its rhythm. The Knights managed the first shot on goal in the seventh minute, but junior keeper Megan Bonelli grabbed it with both hands. Bonelli finished the first half with two saves making a great sliding stop for the second.

The Herd had three shots in the first half, all on goal. Senior Ashley Seltzer recorded the first shot for Marshall in the 34th minute. Juniors Farah and Marah Abu-Tayeh both recorded shots on goal in the 36th minute, however Amanda Fitzgerald the FDU keeper stopped both attempts.

Marshall began the second half with aggressive play as sophomore Rene Ross (51') and Seltzer (53') both took the first shots of the second half. Junior Metzli Gonzalez took a shot after a corner kick in the 64th minute that went wide.

Fairleigh Dickinson broke the scoreless match with a goal in the 76th minute to take the 1-0 lead. The Knights held on to the slim advantage for the remainder of the match despite Marshall adding two more shots.

Bonelli finished the match with four saves. Marshall led in shot attempts 9-8.

"We will build on the positives and I am eager to step forward again against Army on Sunday," coach Long said.

Next up, the Herd travels to West Point, N.Y., to take on Army. The Sunday afternoon match kicks off at 1 p.m.
