WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Marshall women's soccer team battled through 110 minutes to earn a 2-2 draw at Army, Sunday afternoon from Malek Stadium. Junior Megan Bonelli finished the match with six saves while senior Ashley Seltzer and junior Farah Abu-Tayeh each scored their first goals of the season.
The Thundering Herd is now 0-1-1 and the Black Knights move to 1-0-1.
"It took us a while to find each other on the field and that is due to the high level of pressure Army put on us," Herd head coach Kevin Long said. "We were able to show a lot more offense as the game went on and I am hoping that is a sticking trend.
"In the back, we played well but let our guard down a couple times and gave up two goals. We will look to make it a bit harder for our opponents to score moving forward. We are eager to play at home after this long road trip."
Army was on the offensive throughout most of the first half. The Black Knights outshot Marshall 6-4 in the first 45 minutes and took a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute. The Herd managed its first shot in the 24th minute as Abu-Tayeh sent a ball wide. Bonelli recorded two of her six saves in the first half.
Marshall made the offensive adjustment in the second half coming out on the attack with four shots in the first six minutes. The Herd got a great opportunity to tie the match after junior Alyssa Totzke was taken down in the 18-yard box by Army keeper Sydney Cassalia. Seltzer lined up for the penalty kick and knocked it in to the right-side to tie the match at 1-1 in the 53rd minute.
Both teams fought for positioning after the equalizer until Abu-Tayeh took a pass from junior Gabby Powers and sent a shot through to the far side to give the Herd a 2-1 lead with 14:37 to play in regulation. The Black Knights sent in the equalizer with just 90 seconds to go. Marshall had a chance with under a minute to play but Cassalia made the save.
In the first overtime, Marshall recorded two shots to one from Army. Both of the Herd's shots were on goal but could not find the back of the net. Over the final ten minutes, Army took four shots with two on goal but Bonelli was there both times to stonewall the Black Knights' chances. Marshall junior Marah Abu-Tayeh took a shot at the net with ten seconds remaining but could not capitalize.
The Herd returns home after beginning the 2018 season with two road contests, for a match against UT-Martin on Friday, Aug. 24. Kickoff from Hoops Family Field is set for 4:30 p.m., as part of a Marshall soccer doubleheader. The men's team will take on Duquesne for its 2018 season-opener at 7 p.m.
