Women’s Soccer Falls in Home Opener 3-1 to UT-Martin

F. Abu-Tayeh tallies second goal of season

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.—The Marshall women's soccer team struck first, but fell in the home opener to UT-Martin by a final score of 3-1 Friday afternoon at Hoops Family Field.

The Thundering Herd falls to 0-2-1 as the Skyhawks move to 1-1-0.

"It's disappointing," Marshall head coach Kevin Long said. "First home game of the season, I expected more from our team. We'll get at it next week, we have two more games with the idea that we build into peaking at the right time of the season. So while it's a loss and is disappointing, maybe there's a lesson to be learned so that we don't do it again this season."

Marshall had the perfect start when in the 5th minute Farah Abu-Tayeh capitalized on a deflection off the central defense of UT-Martin and buried her shot going solo against the Skyhawks goalkeeper Mackenzie Crawford to give the Thundering Herd an early 1-0 lead.

Abu-Tayeh notched her second goal of the early season and scored for the second consecutive game.

Just over a minute later, Danae Kaldaridou equalized for UT-Martin in the 6th minute. Her goal off the left side was assisted by Skylor Keane. The frantic first half of action continued when the Skyhawks took the lead off a header in the 19th minute.

UT-Martin took control of the contest and outshot Marshall 10-5 after the second goal for the Skyhawks. Marah Abu-Tayeh put a header high in the 24th minute, but the Herd only placed two shots on frame for the remainder of the contest. Skyhawks goalkeeper Crawford saved four Thundering Herd shots on goal.

UT-Martin scored its final goal in 90th minute, with 14 seconds remaining.

Canaan Booton led the Herd with two shots on goal as a substitute. Megan Bonelli made four saves in net for Marshall. UT-Martin outshot Marshall 15-7 and led in corner kicks, 6-2.

"This is the third game in a row we gave up goals that we shouldn't be conceding," Long said. "We've been giving up a lot of goals inside the six [yard box]. We're trying to get out of that scenario so we'll get to training this week and if we can prevent those goals, then we'll be in a lot more games than what we've been this season."

The Herd is back in action on Friday, Aug. 31 for Senior Night, at Hoops Family Field against Eastern Kentucky. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., where the seniors for the Herd will be honored.
