HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Junior twin sister Farah Abu-Tayeh and Marah Abu-Tayeh scored in the second half to give the Marshall women's soccer team a 2-1 win over Eastern Kentucky, Friday night at Hoops Family Field on senior night.
The Thundering Herd improves to 1-2-1 and the Colonels fall to 3-2.
"Great win tonight in a really competitive match," Herd head coach Kevin Long said. "I thought the team did a really good job staying engaged after going down one goal. We have been looking for and talking about grittiness and I thought the team showed a great deal of that tonight.
"We celebrated our seniors tonight and it was great to get a win, our first of the season and a great way to honor all that our seniors have done and been a part of."
After a scoreless first half, EKU found the back of the net first in the 52nd minute to take the 1-0 lead. Marshall went on the attack and seven minutes later, F. Abu-Tayeh netted her team-leading third goal of the season to tie the match. Senior Julianna Smith sent a pass down the middle of the field to the speeding junior forward and Abu-Tayeh beat the keeper for the equalizer.
Two minutes and 33 seconds later Marah Abu-Tayeh took a pass from her sister from the left side and punched it in from three yards out for her first career goal. Marshall held on for the lead throughout the rest of the contest.
"EKU is a good team," coach Long said. "I thought they brought challenges that we had difficulty dealing with. We were able to bend at times while we learned to adjust to what they were doing and it was great to see the game evolve over the 90 minutes."
The Colonels outshot Marshall 10-9 and had five shots on goal. Herd junior keeper Megan Bonelli recorded four saves.
EKU redshirt freshman Sarah Owusu received two yellow cards and was ejected from the match in the 85th minute.
Marshall returns to the pitch on Sunday, Sept. 2, in Athens, Ohio to take on the Ohio Bobcats. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
