Herd Volleyball Opens Season at Dayton Invitational

Marshall plays Dayton Friday, South Alabama and Ball State Saturday

DAYTON, Ohio – Marshall volleyball opens its 2018 season Friday when it competes at the Dayton Invitational. The Herd will play host institution Dayton Friday at 7 p.m. before playing a doubleheader Saturday against South Alabama (10:30 a.m.) and Ball State (5 p.m.).
 
The Herd's match against Dayton Friday night will be broadcast on ESPN+.
 
Marshall returns five members from the 2017 squad that went 11-19 overall and 6-8 in Conference USA.  Sophomore Katie Jacques led all returners with 67 kills. Seniors Lauren Mattmuller and Shelby Conley had 49 and 22 kills, respectively, while junior Amber Weber recorded 229 digs. Redshirt junior Jayden Jacobs also returns after being used primarily to serve in 2017. The Herd has to replace its top six kills leaders, top two assists leaders, top three block leaders and its leader in digs from 2017. 
 
Dayton finished the 2017 season with a 23-8 record and a 13-1 mark in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Seniors Lauren Bruns and Kendyll Brown return for the Flyers after combining for 605 kills last season. Margo Wolf also returns after recording 512 digs last year. Dayton will have to replace three starters from its 2017 squad, including two of their top three leaders in kills in Amber Erhahon (315) and Jessica Sloan (292).
 
South Alabama finished the 2017 campaign with a 17-10 record, including a 12-4 mark in the Sun Belt Conference. The Jaguars return three of their top four leaders in kills in Kelley Hartman (245), Iva Durdanovic (240) and Hannah Harris (136). South Alabama also brings back its top two assist leaders in Ashlyn Roberts (413) and Parker Harrell (378). The Jaguars have to replace their digs leader in Abby Baker (402) along with Kristina Alabastro, who was third on the team in kills (214) and second in digs (214).
 
Ball State went 19-11 overall in 2017, including an 11-5 record in the Mid-American Conference. The Cardinals return three of their top four kills leaders in Ellie Dunn (325), Emily Holland (247) and Sydnee Vanbeek (200). Ball State also returns its assist leader in Amber Seaman (1,111) and its digs leader in Kate Avila (583). The Cardinals will have to replace Brooklyn Goodsel, who was second on the team in kills (324) and second in assists (314).
 
Following the three matches at the Dayton Invitational, the Herd welcomes Morehead State to Huntington for its home opener Tuesday at 6 p.m.
