All six singles matches went three sets
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall's first Conference USA match of the season was also its longest, but the visiting Charlotte 49ers (3-3, 1-0 C-USA) defeated the Thundering Herd (2-3, 0-1 C-USA) Sunday afternoon, 5-2, at the Huntington Tennis Club.
"I was impressed with the way Charlotte came back and competed following a tough match yesterday," head coach John Mercer said.
Marshall's struggles in doubles play continued, as Charlotte took an early 1-0 lead in the match. Liz Stefancic and Matilde Mulatero dropped a 6-1 decision to Immie Cowper and Tai Martin, while Anna Smith and Victoria Walter were defeated by Rocio Safont and Emma Scott, 6-3. Daniela Dankanych and Madi Ballow were trailing against Pierina Imparato and Sasha Lee, 5-4, before their match was abandoned.
Singles play was full of ups and downs for both sides, with each of the first five matches going the distance. Dankanych forced a third set in her match before falling to Safont, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2. Stefancic also forced a third set before she was defeated by Imparato in a tiebreak, 6-1, 2-6, 7-6(4). Martin clinched the match win for the 49ers with a 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 comeback win over Smith. Mulatero forced a third set before falling in a super tiebreak to Tahlia vander Eerden, 6-1, 3-6, 1-0(8).
Walter improved her team-leading singles record to 4-1 with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 win over Lee, while Ballow rallied from down a set to win her third singles match in her last four, 6-7(3), 6-2, 6-2, over Scott.
"I thought we did a pretty good job," Mercer said. "We were better than we were on Friday, which is a good sign. We did a lot of things better, but we have a lot of room for improvement and I think we'll keep seeing that as the semester goes along.
Marshall closes its five-match homestand Friday against Louisville, with first serve from the Huntington Tennis Club scheduled for 4 p.m.
