First serve scheduled for 4 p.m. as part of doubleheader for Hokies
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall women's tennis team looks to break its three-match losing streak Sunday when it faces the Virginia Tech Hokies at 4 p.m.
Â
HAVE YOU HERD?
Marshall is playing its first road match since the season opener when it faces the Hokies in the second half of a doubleheader for the ACC school. Virginia Tech faces Delaware at 10 a.m.
Â
Anna Smith and Daniela Dankanych each won a singles match and teamed to win a doubles match in the Herd's last outing against Louisville.
Â
Marshall has four players with a singles record of at least .500 this spring, led by Smith and Victoria Walter, who each sport a 4-2 record. Dankanych and Madi Ballow are each 3-3 this season.
Â
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT: VIRGINIA TECH
Virginia Tech has slumped to a 1-4 record through its first five matches of the season, losing each of its last three matches. The Hokies are coming off a 5-2 loss to Clemson Friday.
Â
Natalie Novotna leads Virginia Tech as its lone ranked player, coming in at No. 121. Novotna won her match against Clemson at the No. 1 position in a super tiebreak. Nina Sorkin earned the Hokies' other point in their ACC opener against Clemson with a 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 4 spot.
Â
Virginia Tech returns eight players from its 2018 team that went 14-12 but most of the returning talent is either at the lower positions in the lineup or from players who did not see much action last year.
Â
Novotna, Nika Kozar and Sorkin are the Hokies' top returning players, but the losses of Katherine Butler, Elena Cerezo-Codina and Caroline Daxhelet to graduation along means Virginia Tech is replacing half of its singles lineup from last year.
Â
SERIES HISTORY
Virginia Tech has a 15-6 in the overall series and won the last match contested between the teams, a 6-1 win in 2018 in Huntington. Marshall won the last contested match in Blacksburg, 5-2, with the Hokies last beating the Thundering Herd on their own home court in 2015.
Â
UP NEXT
Marshall returns home for a two-match weekend against Furman on Friday at 4 p.m. and Penn State on Feb. 17 at 11 a.m.
