3/23/2019 2:07:00 AM | Track and Field

Event concludes Saturday

ROCK HILL, S.C.- Reneese Batson won the hammer throw with a school-record toss of 58.84 meters Friday evening at the 2019 Winthrop Invitational, breaking her own mark set last season at the WCU Invitational.

Hasana Clark also took fourth in the event (54.50 meters).

Marshall had a particularly good day in track events, as Thundering Herd runners won four of the seven preliminary 100-meter hurdle heats. Safiyyah Mitchell's time of 13.45, a new personal best, was good for first overall in the preliminary round. Christianna Dogan (14.24) came in third, and Taylor Robinson (14.63) finished eighth. All three runners qualified for the final. In the 100 meter, Kayla Haywood (11.89) finished fourth--qualifying for the final on Saturday.

Macie Majoy placed second overall in pole vault (mark of 3.60 meters), a week after setting an outdoor school record. Lauren Zaglifa also finished eighth (3.45).

The heptathlon, which concluded earlier in the day, saw Marshall's Sarah Bever finish third and Torie Derrow come in sixth. Bever scored 4651 points, while Derrow totaled 4056 points.

Freshman MaryAnn Adebayo finished seventh (12.50 meters) in shot put, an event that had over 55 competitors.

In the last event of the day, the men's 5000 meter, Marshall cross country's Nickolas Schmidt (15:00.97) placed second, while Alex Minor (15:14.70) and Coy Smith (15:29.92) finished seventh and eleventh, respectively.

The invitational resumes Saturday morning at 9 a.m., when the field events of triple jump, javelin and discus take place.
