HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall women's tennis team rekindles a Mountain State rivalry Sunday morning when it faces the West Virginia Mountaineers on the road at 10 a.m.

HAVE YOU HERD?
Marshall is trying to break an eight-match losing streak this season and a two-match losing streak against WVU. The Herd last defeated the Mountaineers in 2016, with each of the last three matches between the schools resulting in a 4-3 decision.

Liz Stefancic earned her first career win over a ranked opponent in Marshall's last match against North Texas. Stefancic defeated Minying Liang, who was ranked 114th in the nation at the time, in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Following Stefancic's win, Liang dropped completely out of the top 125.

Madi Ballow earned her first career road win against North Texas with a 7-5, 6-3 straight-sets victory over Nidhi Surapaneni. Daniela Dankanych defeated Alexandra Heczey in straight sets in the same match, 6-3, 7-5.

Marshall's 4-3 loss to North Texas was its first 4-3 decision of the season.

Anna Smith secured her team-leading sixth singles win of the season with a win by retirement (leading 7-5, 1-0) against Maryna Veksler of FIU during Marshall's most recent true road match.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT: WEST VIRGINIA
West Virginia enters the weekend with a 6-3 record and will play Binghamton on Saturday prior to facing the Thundering Herd. The Mountaineers are coming off consecutive road losses to VCU and Old Dominion and also lost their only conference match of the season to Iowa State.

WVU is 2-0 at home this season with wins over Cleveland State (5-2) and Akron (4-3).

Anne-Sophie Courteau leads West Virginia in singles play with a 7-2 singles record. Courteau has played primarily at the No. 5 position. Anastasia Bovolskaia is 6-2 in singles play, while Paula Goetz, who plays at the No. 1 spot for WVU, is 5-3.

Bovolskaia and Sofia Duran are 4-1 when paired together in doubles play for WVU, while the tandem of Courteau and Abigail Rosiello are 3-1 for the Mountaineers.

UP NEXT
The Herd returns home for the first time in a month for a pair of Conference USA matches. Marshall will play Middle Tennessee Friday at 4 p.m. and UAB next Saturday (Mar. 16) at 1 p.m., with both matches tentatively scheduled to be played at the Brian David Fox Tennis Center on campus, pending the weather.
