Batson, Heiniger Lead Marshall in Friday’s Track Competitions

Teams back in action Saturday
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – On a day that saw Marshall track and field kick off two separate competitions, the Herd put forth maybe its best performance of the outdoor season.
At Kennesaw State's Don McGarey Invitational, Marshall recorded one win, four second places finishes and two other top five finishes. In fact, every competing athlete registered at least a top-five finish.
Senior Heidi Heiniger won the javelin throw with a mark of 43.96 meters. It was Heiniger's best of the outdoor season. Freshman Sylvia Terente's throw of 40.90 meters was also good for second place. The mark is her new personal best.
In hammer throw, senior Reneese Batson ended up throwing for a new outdoor school record. Just weeks after setting the school record at the Adidas Winthrop Invitational, Batson threw for a distance of 58.88 meters—while grabbing second place in the process. Hasana Clark finished third with a mark of 53.41 meters, and MaryAnn Adebayo finished fifth (her 48.82-meter mark is a now a personal best).
Batson also managed a second place finish in discus throw, with her mark of 40.18 meters.
Day two will begin Saturday afternoon for the Herd, when a team of Brandy Elysee, Kayla Haywood, Safiyyah Mitchell and Talor Wilkerson takes on the 4x100m relay.
The Herd's other meet of the weekend, the State Farm Friends of Track Mountaineer Showcase, was an equally productive venture.
The team came away with one win and six other top-five finishes.
Marshall took the top two spots in the 100-meter hurdles preliminary. Senior Sarah Bever finished first with her 15.37 time, and Torie Derrow finished second (15.81). Both qualified for Saturday's final.
Freshman Kylie Miles performed well in both of her events, taking second in hammer throw and fourth in discus throw.
Madelyn Garrison, another freshman, secured a new 1500-meter personal best time (4:54.01) when she finished third in the event.
In the women's 5000-meter, senior Abigail Short and junior Mary Kerby placed second and third, respectively. On the men's side, Ian Domenick ran a 15:59.97 and finished sixth.
Sarah Bever and Torie Derrow start Saturday off with javelin throw at 9 a.m.
