HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Marshall baseball (18-13, 6-6 C-USA) dropped both games of a double header to Southern Miss on Saturday in Hattiesburg. The first loss marked the first series dropped by the Herd this season, with the second loss marking the first series sweep and three-game losing streak.
Â
Game 1
Wade Martin made his third start of the season and threw a scoreless-first inning despite hitting a pair of batters.
Â
Tucker Linder got the scoring started with a leadoff homer in the top of the second to extend his hitting streak to 15 games.
Â
Geordon Blanton then leadoff the third with a single, followed by a double by Erik Rodriguez to put runners at second and third with no outs. Elvis Peralta brought home Blanton on a sacrifice fly to extend the Herd's lead to 2-0.
Â
Ryan Falls came on in relief of Martin in the second and proceeded to throw five scoreless innings for the second-straight weekend. Falls gave up hits and three walks in those five innings, striking out two batters and inducing two double plays. Falls hasn't given up a run in his last three appearances spanning 14.2 innings.
Â
The seventh inning got Southern Miss back in the game. Robert Kwiatkowski came on in relief of Falls to begin the inning. A leadoff single and a fielder's choice sac bunt that didn't put runners at first and second with no outs. Kwiatkowski forced a bunt pop out to Reynaldo Pastrana to hold the runners at first and second.
Â
Patrick Murphy and Michael Guerrero also came in to pitch in the seventh as the Golden Eagles struck for two runs on bases loaded walks and a wild pitch to put the Herd at a 3-2 deficit after seven.
Â
Peralta picked up the Herd in the next half inning with a leadoff home run to tie the game 3-3. Inskeep walked as the next batter and after a Linder lineout, Pastrana singles to put runners at first and second with one out. However, Andrew Zban grounded into a double play to end the inning.
Â
Guerrero set the Golden Eagles down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the eighth to keep the game tied heading to the ninth. After the Herd went down in order in the top of the ninth, Southern Miss led off the bottom of the inning with a triple. Marshall intentionally walked the next two batters to have force outs at every base. The next batter collected a walk-off single for a 4-3 Southern Miss win.
Â
