Baseball’s Comeback Falls Short in Extra-Inning Loss to ODU

The Herd overcame four-run deficit before falling in the tenth inning

Box Score

NORFOLK, Va. – Herd baseball's (24-24, 11-13) comeback falls in a 6-5 extra–inning loss to ODU in 10 innings in game one of a three-game series on Friday night in Norfolk, Va.

Vinnie Pasquantino put the Monarchs up 2-0 in the bottom of the first with a two-run homer.

ODU then scored another two runs thanks to an error that extended the bottom of the third and went up 4-0.

Shane Hanon put Marshall on the board with a two-out RBI single to left that plated Luke Edwards and cut the deficit to 4-1 in the top of the fifth. However, Pasquantino answered for the Monarchs with his second homer of the game to put ODU's lead to 5-1.

The two-out magic continued into the sixth for the Herd as Raul Cabrera brought home Tucker Linder with a two-out double to make it a 5-2 ball game.

Starting pitcher Joshua Shapiro exited the game after six innings of work. Shapiro allowed five runs, three earned, on five hits and three walks while recording three strikeouts. The lefty threw a season-high 114 pitches.

The combination of Garett Priestley and Philip Hoffman threw two scoreless innings out the of the bullpen. Hoffman went 1.2 innings and struck out the side in the eighth after allowing the first two Monarchs to reach base.

Marshall's two-out rallies continued in the ninth. Erik Rodriguez got the rally started with a single through the left side and Hanon followed up with a walk. Down to the team's last strike, Elvis Peralta, Jr., doubled through the left side to score Rodriguez and put runners into scoring position. Linder was the next batter and was also down to his last strike, when he smoked a single to right to score two and tie the game 5-5.

D'Andre Knight came on to pitch the ninth for Marshall and didn't allow a run to force the game into extra innings.

Matt Schwarz hit a walk-off homer for the Monarchs in the bottom of the tenth to win the game, 6-5, for ODU.

Linder went three-for-five in the game with two RBI and a run scored.
