The contest was the longest in Conference USA Championship history
BILOXI, Miss. – The resilient Herd (29-26) takes its third extra-game in its last four contests defeating Louisiana Tech, 6-4, in 12 innings to advance in the winners' bracket of The First 2019 C-USA Baseball Championship on Wednesday at MGM Park in Biloxi, Miss.
The game lasted four hours and forty-nine minutes and was the longest game in C-USA Championship history.
"I'm of these guys and the way they hang in there," 13th-year head coach Jeff Waggoner said. "Everybody stepped up today. I told them they'd have to. There are no roles this time of the year. There's no closer, no game two or three starter. We'll do whatever it takes to win and we'll see what happens tomorrow. That's' how we played today."
Shane Hanon delivered the game-winning two-RBI single, after Elvis Peralta made a game-saving diving stop for the final out in the bottom of the 11th.
"It feels good in all honesty," Peralta said about the team's resilient performances in the last four games. "When you're winning games, everyone is believing in each other. Whether you're winning or your down, everyone is sticking together and staying hot. I love it."
Marshall got on the board with a run in the top of the first as Shane Hanon, Elvis Peralta and Tucker Linder each drew one-out walks to load the bases, then the Bulldog first baseman committed an error on batted ball by Zach Inskeep.
After Herd starting pitcher Joshua Shapiro gave up a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first, he induced a 5-4-3 double play. Then the Bulldogs got a two-out single, but he struck out the next batter to end the inning.
Taking the momentum into the second, Luke Edwards hit a ball to deep right-center field that was just out of the reach of the centerfielder for a triple. Geordon Blanton followed up with a double to left to score Edwards. Erik Rodriguez followed with a bunt single, then Hanon hit a sac fly to center to make it 3-0 Marshall.
Shapiro collected his first 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the second, but the Bulldogs struck for a run in the third after a two-out walk and a wild pitch to make 3-1 Herd.
Marshall added another run in the top of the sixth after Hanon reached second on a two-base error and was batted home by Peralta on a ground-rule double to make it 4-1.
Shapiro's outing came to an end after six and two-thirds innings as he was pulled after he gave up a walk and a double for the Bulldogs second run of the game. He gave up three runs, all earned, on four hits and four walks with six strikeouts.
Michael Guerrero came on for Shapiro and issued a pair of wild pitches as LA Tech pulled within one, 4-3, after seven innings of play.
After a scoreless eighth inning for the Herd's closer, Guerrero had a hard time finding the zone in the ninth. After hitting a batter and giving up two walks, the bases were loaded with Bulldogs and two outs on the board. The tying run scored on a walk as the teams headed to extra innings.
As the teams played a scoreless one and a half innings, Louisiana Tech had a runner at second with two outs. Taylor Young took the 2-1 pitch up the middle, but Peralta made the diving stop and throw to prevent the game winning run from scoring.
Marshall got the bats going in the top of the 12th as Raul Cabrera reached on an error and Blanton singles through the left side with one out to have runners at first and second with one out. Rodriguez reached on a fielder's choice as Cabrera was out at third, but Blanton and Rodriguez advanced on a wild pitch to have runners in scoring position with two outs and Hanon at the plate.
Down to his last strike, Hanon took the pitch up the middle for a two-RBI single to put the Herd back on top, 6-4.
Philip Hoffman came on in the 12th and threw a perfect inning on 10 pitches to earn the first save of his career.
Marshall could not have reached the 12th without scoreless innings from D'Andre Knight and Robert Kwiatkowski in the 10th and 11th, respectively, with Kwiatkowski earning his second win of the season.
"It was an all-around team effort. Raul (Cabrera) made a play, Elvis made a great play. We got a big hit from Shane Hanon. Overall, everyone stepped up and did their job," Waggoner said about the win.
NOTES
- Edwards' triple was the first of his career.
