Men’s Soccer Kicks off 2019 at Purdue Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Marshall men's soccer team kicks off the 2019 season at Purdue Fort Wayne, Friday at 7 p.m., from Hefner Soccer Complex.

The Thundering Herd is coming off its second consecutive season reaching the Conference USA Tournament semi-finals. Marshall lost to the No. 1 seed and third-ranked Kentucky, 2-1. The Herd returns nine players who logged over 1,000 minutes of playing time in 2018. All four of Marshall's all-conference performers from a year ago are back in seniors Paulo Pita, Carlos Diaz-Salcedo, Illal Osmanu and freshman Vinicius Fernandes. Pita was the leader in the net in his first season with the Herd with over 1,500 minutes, 71 saves, three shutouts and a .755 save percentage. Diaz-Salcedo and Osmanu helped solidify the defense. Junior Jamil Roberts is the leading returning scorer with five goals and four assists in 2018. In the Herd's 3-0 victory over Purdue Fort Wayne in 2018, Roberts scored the first goal in the 18th minute and Pedro Dolabella scored the third goal in the 45th minute. Pita finished with five saves in the shutout.
Head coach Chris Grassie enters his third season leading the Herd and has brought in a talented group of newcomers to mix with his experienced veterans. Marshall was selected fourth in the preseason Conference USA coaches' poll, the highest that the Herd has ever been selected since moving to C-USA.
Opponent
Purdue Fort Wayne finished 2018 with a 10-8-1 record and was eliminated in the first round of the Summit League Championships, 1-0, by Omaha. The Mastodons will be looking to replace its leading scorer from a year ago in Matthew Lieshout who knocked in 12 goals in 33 total shots. Second leading scorer Blake Cearns is back after having scored a career-high eight goals. Sophomore Tor Erik Larsen is back after leading the Mastodons in the net with over 1,600 minutes, 91 saves and a .734 save percentage.
Purdue Fort Wayne was picked to finish third in the Summit League preseason coaches' poll behind Denver and Omaha.
