HUNTINGTON, W.Va – Marshall women's soccer (1-2-0) shuts out Youngstown State (1-2-0), 3-0, on Friday in its home opener behind a pair of goals from Jordan Sackaris and a goal from Farah Abu-Tayeh at Hoops Family Field. Lindsay Langley recorded her first win and shutout of her career in goal for the Herd.

"The team has done a great job of mentally staying on top of it," head coach Kevin Long said about winning the home opener after a pair of losses the opening weekend. "They didn't bury their heads after giving up 10 goals. They know every game is going to be a step forward. We have to find positives on things we improve on from game-to-game. I think we saw that tonight. They played 90 minutes of end-line to end-line soccer tonight. It was a great step forward."

The first two shots on goal were credited to the Penguins as Langley saved both attempts in the fifth and 30th minutes.

Marshall then put pressure on the visitors with shots by Gabby Powers after a corner kick at the 34:45 mark and another by Rene Ross under 30-seconds later, but both were saved by the YSU keeper.

MU wouldn't be held off the scoresheet for much longer though as F. Abu-Tayeh sent a low cross into the box in which Jordan Sackaris put in the back of the goal for her first of the season in the 37th minute.

After leading 1-0 at the half, Molly Preston put the first shot on target in the second half, but it was saved in 61st minute by the Penguin goal keeper.

However, nearly three minutes later, Ross sent a through ball to Sackaris and she put it home for her second goal of the match at the 63:32 mark.

"She (Sackaris) is coming back and she's starting to find her game," Long said about Sackaris coming back from her injury last season. "Tonight is going to be a huge boost to her confidence. We think she has a chance to break assistant coach Erika Duncan's all-time goals record. Nights like tonight show you why. She's relentless."

10 minutes after Sackaris' second goal, a YSU defender had a giveaway to F. Abu-Tayeh in the Penguins' box and she didn't make a mistake with it as she gave Marshall its final lead of 3-0 with her first goal of the season.

The Herd defense helped Langley in goal allowing just a single shot on target in the final 60:50 of the match.

Five yellow cards were issued in the contest, one to Youngstown State and four to Marshall. F. Abu-Tayeh, Ross, M. Abu-Tayeh and Stephanie Cuan each received yellow cards for the Herd.

MU outshot YSU 8-3 with shots on target.

Marshall looks to ride its momentum in a match with the Ohio Bobcats on Sunday at 1 p.m.
