Volleyball Loses Final Match at Indiana Invitational in Four Sets

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Marshall volleyball team fought but in the end fell to the Santa Clara Broncos (20-25, 20-25, 25-22, 15-25) on the final day of the Indiana Invitational, Saturday afternoon.

The Thundering Herd is now 1-2 to start the 2019 season and the Broncos improve to 3-0.

"Overall we're satisfied with the things we wanted to execute on this weekend," coach Ari Aganus said. "We had players step up between yesterday and today. We also have a lot of takeaways to be able to grow from the rest of the season and as we shift our focus to next week when we travel to Georgetown."

Redshirt junior Ciara Debell recorded double-digit kills for the third-straight match leading the Herd with 13. Senior Ivana Trencheva tallied 11 kills and finished with a hitting percentage of .529. Sophomore Joelle Coulter had seven kills in her first action of the season. Junior Destiny Leon had six kills and was 4-of-4 in the first set. Sophomore Gabrielle Coulter recorded 18 assists in the match while junior Sydney Lostumo had 16 assists.

On the defensive side, senior Amber Weber had a season-high 19 digs while J. Coulter finished with 10. Marshall also ended the day with 10 total blocks. Leon was solid in the middle with six.

The Herd trailed throughout the first set and tied the score twice, and pulled within one, at 17-16. It wasn't enough as Santa Clara pulled away at the end for the 25-20 win.

The second set was a back-and-forth battle that featured two lead changes and eight ties. Marshall scored 3-straight to tie the set at 18-18 and then came back to get within one point at 21-20. The Broncos scored the final four points to take the 2-0 lead.

The Herd put it all out on the floor in the third set and jumped out to a 3-1 lead. Throughout the rest of the third frame the score was tied 10 times and there were seven lead changes. Marshall continued to fight through as a solo block from sophomore Isa Dostal brought it to set-point, and the Debell recorded a kill to finish the period. Marshall took its first set, and trailed 2-1.

The Broncos led from start to finish, except for the score being tied once at 2-2, in the fourth set to grab the match. Marshall's last point of the day came on a kill by J. Coulter.

The Herd continues its 2019 journey on the road at the Georgetown Invitational, Sept. 6-7. Marshall will take on Georgetown Sept. 6 at 5 p.m., then Stony Brook Sept. 7 at 11 a.m., then end the weekend against Northern Kentucky on Sept. 7 at 5 p.m.
