WASHINGTON D.C. – The Marshall volleyball team got off to a fast start and then held on for a tough five-set victory (25-16, 25-15, 15-25, 22-25, 15-10) over the Georgetown Hoyas Friday night.

The Thundering Herd improved to 2-2 while Georgetown fell to 3-2.

"The grit we showed tonight is something we've been seeing daily in practice and we're very pleased to see it translate on the court," coach Ari Aganus said. "We were able to finally get our middles in-system and spread our offense. The match and the environment were both challenging and exciting, but we are happy to pull out the win."

Three players for the Herd all finished with double-digit kills in the match. Redshirt junior Ciara Debell led the team with 18 while sophomore Sarah Schank was right behind with 16. Junior Destiny Leon tallied a career-high 11 and hit at a .381 clip for the match. Junior setter Sydney Lostumo led the way with 30 assists and sophomore Gabrielle Coulter had 18. Senior libero Amber Weber led the Herd with 18 digs and added six assists. Sophomore Isa Dostall continues to be a blocking force picking up seven total blocks in the match.

Marshall came firing right out from the first serve scoring the first three points. The Herd led from beginning to end taking the first set 25-16. The second set started a little different as Marshall trailed 2-0 at the start but then quickly came back and took the lead at 5-4. The Herd again held the lead throughout the rest of the set in getting to a 2-0 lead with a 25-15 win. As a team, Marshall finished with a .400 hitting percentage in the first set and .455 in the second.

The Hoyas did not go away quietly, storming back on its home floor to take the third set by a score of 25-15. The score was tied at 11-11 before Georgetown went on a 5-0 run to pull away. The Hoyas then scored the first four points of the fourth set and held the lead throughout, however the Herd battled toward the end and made things close just before the 25-22 Georgetown win to force the fifth and final set.

The fifth set began looking like things were going to go Georgetown's way scoring the first two points. However, a kill by Schank and then a Hoya error tied the set at 2-2 and the two teams began a back-and-forth fight until Marshall took the lead at 9-8 and then slowly started to pull away. A kill by senior Ivana Trencheva brought on match-point and then another Georgetown error led to the Marshall win, 15-10.

Marshall continues play in the Bulldog Invitational on Saturday with two matches. First, the Herd will take on Stony Brook at 11 a.m., and then play Northern Kentucky at 5 p.m. Live stats will be available for each match. More information on the tournament can be found on the tournament page.
