WASHINGTON D.C. – The Marshall volleyball team took a three-set sweep (25-23, 25-14, 25-17) over the Stony Brook Seawolves Saturday afternoon on day two of the Bulldog Invitational, hosted by Georgetown.

The Thundering Herd improves to 3-2 while the Seawolves fall to 0-6.

"Very proud of our entire team coming out from a 5-set match last night and showing up this morning ready to work," Herd head coach Ari Aganus said. "We've been working really hard to get our serving in motion and getting 11 aces gave us huge momentum throughout the entire match.

"We spread the ball well on offense and we were able to lean on Ciara (Debell) with 15 kills and only two errors. Stony Brook has a history of being a successful program so coming out of the gate and getting a 3-0 sweep is what we as a staff are really proud of because the team stayed focused, disciplined and stayed as a unit the entire match."

Redshirt junior Ciara Debell recorded eight of her game-high 15 kills in the second set. Debell finished with a .448 attack percentage, added seven digs and three total blocks. Sophomore Sarah Schank was next with seven kills and had three of the Herd's service aces. Junior Sydney Lostumo led the Herd with 19 assists and had four aces in the match. Sophomore Gabrielle Coulter recorded 10 assists. Sophomore Autumn Elswick added three aces. Senior libero Amber Weber recorded 10 digs, two assists and one ace.

Marshall out hit Stony Brook .301 to .222, had 11 aces to the Seawolves five and held the advantage in errors. Stony Brook finished with 15 attack errors as well as eight service errors while Marshall had just nine attacking errors and four service errors.

The Herd came right out from the start and took an early lead in the first set. Stony Brook battled back and used a 4-0 run to take a two-point lead at 15-13. The Seawolves looked as if it was going to put away the first set with a 22-17 lead until the Herd went on an 8-1 run to come roaring back and win set one, 25-23. A service ace from Schank moved it to set-point and then a Stony Brook error capped the set.

Marshall again jumped out to an early lead in the second set as Debell was smashing away. The Seawolves fought back to make it a one-point deficit at 11-10. However, the Herd ran off a 7-1 run to build the lead out to seven, 18-11. Marshall finished off the second set, 7-3, over Stony Brook to reach the final of 25-14. Two Seawolves errors led to the final two points.

The Herd wasted little time in making things hard on Stony Brook in the third set, flying out to a 7-2 lead. The Seawolves again showing that fight, tied the set at 10-10. But again, Marshall rolled out from the tie score on a 4-0 run and ultimately a 9-1 run to help put away the opposition. Marshall scored the final four points of the match thanks to two kills from sophomore Joelle Coulter and two Stony Brook errors.

Marshall has one final match at the Bulldog Invitational later on Saturday at 5 p.m. against Northern Kentucky. Live Stats are available for the match.
