WASHINGTON D.C. – The Marshall volleyball team finished off the Bulldog Invitational with a sweep (25-14, 25-17, 25-18) of the Northern Kentucky Norse Saturday evening. Marshall went 3-0 during the tournament as redshirt junior Ciara Debell was named Tournament MVP and junior Destiny Leon and sophomore Isa Dostal were named to the All-Tournament team.

The Thundering Herd is now 4-2 overall and the Norse drop to 4-2.

"It was a great challenge coming into this weekend with three really tough opponents," Herd head coach Ari Aganus said. "We stuck to the game plan, stayed patient and trusted the system. I couldn't be more proud of the entire team for trusting the process and staying both mentally and physically tough through another weekend on the road.

"I'm proud of our passing and the leadership we have in the back row because we were able to establish our middles and make them an offensive threat which lead to Isa (Dostall) and Destiny (Leon) making the All-Tournament team. Ciara (Debell) battled and found ways to be an offensive and defensive threat to earn All-Tournament MVP. We're excited to get home for a couple days and get back on the road to continue growing."

Debell led the way again on offense with 14 kills, added seven digs and three total blocks. She finished the weekend with 47 total kills in 11 sets, an average of 4.27 per set. Sophomore Sarah Schank recorded seven kills and had nine digs. Junior Sydney Lostumo finished with 16 assists while sophomore Gabrielle Coulter tallied 13. Senior libero Amber Weber led the team with 11 digs and added five assists.

Along the net, Marshall was a blocking machine. As a team, the Herd recorded 13 blocks while NKU had just three. Dostal had three solo blocks and assisted on five others. Leon had one solo block and assisted on four more. Sophomore Mion Weldon chipped in five blocking assists and Debell had three block assists as well.

The entire match was a day of runs for the Herd who continued to pour in points to build out leads. Marshall led from beginning to end in the first set. NKU pulled within one point at 6-5, but the Herd used its first big run of the day scoring 10 unanswered to go up 16-5. A kill from Dostal finished the set and put Marshall up 1-0.

The second set was a tight battle in the beginning as the score was tied five times and once the Herd took the lead at 6-5, the squad did not let go. Marshall used a 6-1 run to build the lead out to five, 11-6. The Herd also tallied two more three-point runs to continue to pull ahead and take the second set as Debell recorded one more kill to end the period.

The third set was much of the same with the score tied just once at 4-4. Marshall went on a 7-0 run to put the score at 11-4. NKU had a run of its own scoring the next five points to bring it back to a two-point deficit. NKU kept it close and trailed by two again at 20-18, but then Marshall scored the final five points to take the set and the match.

The Herd hits the road again Friday and Saturday, Sept. 13-14, to St. Louis for the Billiken Invitational. Marshall will take on UT-Martin, Saint Louis and Troy.
