Marshall honored seven seniors prior to the match
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Paced by a pair of goals off headers by Mary Lawman and a strike by Molly Preston, Marshall women's soccer (2-5-0) picked up the 3-1 victory on Senior Day over the High Point Panthers (1-6-0) Sunday at Hoops Family Field.
"I thought from the first kick in the first half we controlled the tempo of play," Marshall head coach Kevin Long said after the victory. "We looked dangerous throughout the game. I think for the first time this season we were able to see a complete effort. In our last several games, we were outshot tremendously by our opponents. We wanted that to become more level and see more offensive opportunities. I think we saw that in the first half."
Marshall honored seven seniors prior to the contest with the class of 2019 comprised of Marah Abu-Tayeh, Farah Abu-Tayeh, Alyssa Totzke, Chloe Smith, Rebekah Cook, Karen Rogge and Gabby Powers.
Preston got the scoring started in the 17th minute, taking a pass from Rene Ross up the middle and blasting it past the keeper.
10 minutes later, the Herd was set up for a corner with Ross on the ball. Ross drove the ball into the box and Lawman headed it into the back of the goal to put MU up 2-0. It was the second straight game Marshall scored a goal off a corner via Ross to Lawman.
High Point got on the board with a penalty kick scored by Kyle Levesque at the 39:24 mark, but 50 seconds later Lawman took a ball headed by Metztli Gonzalez in the air and headed it home to put the Herd up 3-1 with her second score of the day.
"To me, it always means a lot to score and get the win," Lawman said after her two-goal game in the win. "However, without the team I have out there with me, it wouldn't be possible."
After making three saves in the first half, Lindsay Langley played a crucial role in preserving the lead in the second half. Langley made six saves in the second half with four of those coming in the last 20 minutes of play, including two in the final two minutes.
Her nine saves in regulation came after making a career-high 11 in a double overtime loss at No. 9 Vanderbilt last weekend.
Lawman now has a team-leading three goals, all in the last two contests.
Ross has a team-leading four assists with three of the four coming in the last two games.
Marshall tied a season-high three schools scored at home on Aug. 30 against Youngstown State in a 3-0 win.
The Herd will be back in action Thursday (Sept. 19) when it opens up conference play at FAU with a first kick scheduled for 7 p.m.
