Herd wins six events
HUNTINGTON, W.Va.—Thundering Herd athletes won six of the 15 contested events and finished tied for first place overall in the third annual Marshall Women's Classic Saturday afternoon at the Jeff Small Track at the Chris Cline Athletics Complex.
Marshall and James Madison each recorded 149 team points for the afternoon, sharing the meet victory. Ohio finished in third (113 points) and Morehead State in fourth (30 points). In the 2018 Marshall Women's Classic, the Thundering Herd and Duquesne tied for the meet victory. Marshall won the meet outright last season.
"We had great performances across the board," head coach Jeff Small said. "A lot of personal records, the kids did their homework over break to pick up where they left off. We still have some things to work on to achieve our long-term goals but overall it was a good day."
In the first team meet of 2020, sophomore Takira Williams earned the first individual win of the day in the long jump. Her best mark of 17 feet 9 inches (5.41 meters) secured the win by over six inches.

Senior Denisha West won by over a foot over second place in the triple jump. Her top mark of 39 ft. 7.25 in. (12.07m) gave Marshall 10 points in team standings.
Of the eight finalists from preliminaries in the 60 meter hurdles, six were Marshall sprinters. The top-four finishers in the finals were Thundering Herd athletes, led by senior Safiyyah Mitchell, who ran in 8.45 seconds.
In the 600 meter dash, all six competing athletes were Marshall runners. Freshman Mikah Alleyne won with a time of 1:39.05.
In the final event of the day, securing the team victory, the 4x400 meter relay team of Erica Murphy, Danere'a White, Brandy Elysee, and Safiyyah Mitchell won with a time of 3:57.57.
