Thundering Herd Falls in Dual Meet
BOONE, N.C. – Marshall cross country ran its final race of the regular season Friday at the Blue Ridge Open, hosted by Appalachian State at the Don Kennedy Trails at State Farm.
The meet was the first dual meet for the Thundering Herd program since 2011. The hosts Appalachian State swept the meet, winning the men's 8K race 15-47 and the women's 5K race 15-49.
"Today was a lot of fun," assistant coach Caleb Bowen said. "All of our kids went out and put themselves in good positions early and competed well. Obviously, I think we wanted to finish better but we wanted to get some great competition and that's just going to make us better in Birmingham in a few weeks."
For the second consecutive meet, the women's and men's squads were led by redshirt junior Kyleigh Edwards and sophomore Jacob Birurakis, respectively. Edwards finished seventh in the women's 5K with a time of 18:23.17.
She was followed by sophomore Abby Herring in 10th (18:46.33), freshman Tori Dotson in 12th (18:53.50), sophomore Sydney Smith (17th-19:18.96) and junior Madelyn Garrison (19th-19:34.46).
Along with Dotson, freshmen Kalei Jordan (21st-19:57.35) and Mackenzie Stanley (24th-20:21.17) each made their collegiate debut Friday.
Following Birurakis' sixth place finish and 8K time of 26:37.47 were fellow sophomores Evan White in eighth (26:59.24) and Brett Armbruster in 11th (27:42.05). Junior Christian Bradford finished 13th with a time of 27:52.38, followed by sophomore Ronnie Saunders in 14th (28:08.65).
Senior Josh Endres finished 15th (28:17.90) and freshman Kent Bee finished 18th (29:07.71).
