Shuttle Hurdle Relay Record Goes Down

LYNCHBURG, Va.—Marshall track and field accounted for two wins and one new school record Saturday at the Flames Invitational hosted by Liberty University.
The shuttle hurdle relay team of seniors Hannah Carreon, Taylor Robinson, Safiyyah Mitchell and sophomore Ashonti Warner won the event with a time of 34.16. The time shatters the previous school record of 36.11 set in 2018, also at Liberty University, by Carreon, Robinson, Sarah Bever and Isabella Tremble.
Shortly after, Mitchell individually in the 60 meter hurdles won with a time of 8.53. The Huntington native has won the event in all five meets this season for the Thundering Herd. Five of the top-eight in the event were Marshall hurdlers: Carreon (3rd), Robinson (4th), Christianna Dogan (6th) and Warner (7th).
Carreon, in addition to being part of the broken shuttle hurdle relay team and her 3rd place finish in the 60 meter hurdles, qualified for the 60 meter finals and finished 5th with a time of 7.90 seconds.
Marshall nearly had two more broken school records on Saturday. The 4x400 meter relay team of Dogan, Warner, Mitchell and freshman Mikah Alleyne finished 2nd with a time of 3:46.22, nearly dismantling the previous record of 3:45.84 set in 2018.
Junior Brandy Elysee finished 2nd overall in the 300 meter dash, running just over a second behind her 2017 school record time of 39.13 in the race.
"We had another solid week with several personal bests across all event areas," head coach Jeff Small said. "Our relay teams ran great. The shuttle hurdle relay broke the school record by two seconds while the 4x400 meter relay team ran the second fastest time in Conference USA, and just missed the school record.
We're looking forward to our final home meet next week for our last tune-up before the Conference USA Championships."
